Auckland is fast becoming recognised as one of the most exciting cities in the world to work as an urban designer.
Auckland’s vision is to be a World-class city. Achieving this will require a determined push to be a design-led city where design excellence will be demonstrated by council’s plans, projects and policies.
This is an excellent opportunity to join Auckland Council’s Auckland Design Office (ADO), Council’s Centre of Design Excellence. The ADO is responsible for leading the design conversation as well as shaping, advocating and delivering ‘design quality’ for Auckland.
Playing a critical role in the Urban Design Strategy unit will see you communicating the evolving story of urban design in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland). You will be working with a range of people across the Council and other organisations. You will be contributing to the ADO input into strategic infrastructure projects such as the mass transit project, walking and cycling programmes, and transit orientated developments, policy and best practice. You will be working with people advocating the implementation of Universal Design and Māori Design Principles across these projects as well as city design focussed organisations such as the Tāmaki Makaurau Design Alliance.
This is a great opportunity for a talented creative with urban design skills and experience.
Ideally you will bring experience working in the areas of urban design / architecture / public realm or design policy formulation and working experience in the urban design field including development and implementation of ‘best practices’.
An enthusiast for cities, you will have experience in successful relationship management and knowledge of relevant legislative and regulatory requirements and frameworks within the Local Government environment.
Experience of developing urban design strategies, design policy and guidance would be an advantage. You will be comfortable with hand drawing and some experience in the use of Adobe Creative Suite applications (Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator), Sketch-Up and a CAD platform.
Technically sound, you will bring ability to work in partnership across the professions and sectors to deliver exemplary urban design outcomes. Naturally you will strong verbal communication skills with the ability to present to a wide range of audiences.
Senior roles require experience of project management.
Please apply if you can say yes to the above and want to work in an exciting and challenging environment shaping the future built environment of Auckland.
