About the Product Designer role
OpenGov is looking for a product designer who is motivated, ready to learn, and excited to help local governments solve problems and better serve their citizens. You will use research and design tools to understand organization and user needs. You will communicate and prototype design solutions using sketches, wireframes, and high-fidelity visual mockups. Collaborating closely with engineers and product managers to understand user needs, you will shape a solution and get it in the hands of users.
We are looking for an organized, detailed-oriented designer who will bring ideas, tools, and processes that help our team collaborate and solve problems. You know how to deal with constraints and a fast-paced environment, while holding yourself and the team to a standard of excellence and beauty.
We are committed to a workplace that reflects the governments and communities we serve. We especially encourage women, people of color, and others who are underrepresented in the tech industry to apply.
To apply, send us your resume, examples of your work, and a few words about why you are excited to work with local governments and citizens.
Design wireframes, mock-ups, and prototypes and validate them with users.
Understand government user personas and user needs to craft elegant, but practical user-focused solutions.
Work with product and engineering leaders to define product use cases, product requirements, customer journeys, and interactions.
Own product and feature UX for iterative product lifecycle: discovery, research, concept, prototype, ship, refine.
Help our team pick the right methods and design thinking tools for research and problem solving.
Contribute to a unified design system and reusable UI patterns across products.
Work with agile engineering teams to deliver and iterate on high-quality, user-centered products.
Use data from research and product analytics to understand customer needs, make decisions, and communicate solutions.
Present your work to the design team, product stakeholders, and senior leadership to receive feedback and communicate the value of design.
Education and Experience
2-5 years of experience working with cross-functional product and engineering teams.
Strong understanding of how to apply human factors and user-centered design principles to software, including jobs stories, journey maps, info architecture, prototyping, and user testing.
Experience with software tools for design creation (e.g. Sketch, Illustrator) and collaboration (e.g. InVision).
Strong communication and presentation skills that allow you to clearly present complex research and design ideas to the team.
Ability to start with complex data and customer workflows and drive toward simple and intuitive solutions.
Completed undergraduate or graduate degree in related field.
Experience in user-centered design methods, visual design exploration, storytelling and detailed interaction design.
Experience designing for a variety of mediums and surfaces, including mobile devices and printed materials
Experience with complex systems and wicked problems in government, finance, and enterprise domains
